Even the Ocean Needs Rest Between Waves
Finding Strength in Stillness and Embracing the Pause
I caught a cold yesterday. It crept in. My body felt heavy, my throat scratchy, and the world seemed wrapped in a sluggish fog. As I sit here, sniffling and sipping tea, a thought drifts into my mind: even the ocean needs rest between waves.
It’s easy to forget this. We live in a world where constant motion feels like the norm. Productivity is celebrated. Hustle is a badge of honor. We measure ourselves by output, achievements, performances. But nature, in its wisdom, speaks differently. The ocean doesn’t batter the shore relentlessly. It surges with purpose, then retreats, gathering strength before releasing. Its power lies not just in motion, but in the spaces it leaves behind. The pauses where silence holds meaning.
As writers and creatives, we chase the next sentence. The next idea. The next accomplishment. We worry that pausing might cause us to lose momentum, or worse, fade into irrelevance. But what if the pauses are where the magic hides? What if the stillness is the breath between the beats?
This cold, inconvenient as it is, has been a teacher. It whispered that rest isn’t a detour from the creative path; it’s part of the landscape. Like the ocean, we need stillness to gather. To exhale deeply. To sit with our thoughts, letting them settle without rushing to shape them.
When we allow rest, ideas surface from depths we rarely explore. Inspiration doesn’t shout over the noise of doing; it murmurs softly in the stillness of being. The stories we long to tell often float in that space, waiting patiently for us to notice, to listen, to breathe.
If you’re feeling weary, stuck, or uninspired, it's not failure. It's an invitation. A nudge to step back. Let the tide ebb. Trust it will return, brimming with new energy, new clarity.
Today, I’m honoring the pause. Letting this cold slow me down, not with frustration, but with gratitude. Because even in stillness, there is movement. Even in rest, there is growth. Even in the pause, there is life.
